A Few Changes

After 6 weeks of full on textbook based learning I have decided to go back to our old way of doing things by combining a few textbooks with unit studies each term.

We have 9 - 11 weeks in each term and 4 terms a year.

The first 6-7 weeks we will do textbook based schooling in just the core basics.

The last 3 or so weeks we all do an interest based unit study together plus math 4 x a week.

During our textbook phase we are really liking and keeping...

Voyages in English Gr 3 and Gr6 (Ds10, Ds11)4 x a week
ACE English Gr 2-3 (Dd7)4 x a week
ACE Word-Building (All) 4 x a week
ACE Math Gr 2(dd7)Daily
NZ curriculum Math Yrs 7 and 8 Ds10 and Ds11 4 x a week
Handwriting W/O Tears Gr2 and Gr4 (Dd7 and Ds10) 2 x a week
Copywork (ALL) Scripture
Personal Proof Reading and Editing Skills (All) Fridays only

BJU Science and other Science based books will be offered as a reading activity only as the Kids are not enjoying this as a curriculum subject but I want them to at least read a bit of science each week.

For the most part Science, History and Social Studies will be learned from Literature read alouds, daily life and child lead learning.

During our Unit Studies I am hoping to alternate between Science, History, Geography and Literature based units. This term we are doing a 3 week unit on Books. We will start this on Monday.

My kids learn well from text books and they make my life easier. However they also love family learning and unit studies and dd7 is ALWAYS asking for more hands on activities. So I am hoping this will be a nice compromise and a good balanced approach for us.

Here is my planning for our Books unit study
