Typical Days and Weeks

This topic has often come up in discussion and is one that facinates me. It is also the topic of our next boys group and so I thought I'd write about it here too.

I know that in homeschooling circles there is often no such thing as a typical week or day especially as we all approach things so differently but speaking generally I would love to know what a typical day and week looks like in your homes particularly for those of you with middle and highschoolers. As many off us are juggling the needs of more than one child our weeks are often chaotic and vary but it is still interesting to me to read about other peoples weeks.

For us it goes a little like this (on a good week)

 DS2 makes our weeks a tad chaotic but he is always a good sourse of entertainment.

Monday is often a longer school day. We start with Bible and devotions around 8:30 - 9am and then move into our days lessons. We usually spend around 30 - 45 minutes with me reading aloud on our unit study topic and then we do some sort of compositional activity relating to the days reading. After that we take a morning tea break and then the kids disperse to work on their individual work which is vocab/spelling, math and my ds13 has his own research project/essay to work on. At around 12pm we take a lunch break and when the toddler goes down for his nap we do some sort of art acticity or some sort of hands on activity relating to our unit study. Anything left unfinished from our earlier assignments is then completed by the kids. Monday's academics usually wrap up around 2:30 or 3pm. At 5pm the kids go to athletics and then the ds13 and ds11 also have an evening basketball game. In a couple of weeks time athletics will finish and then ds13 will have rugby practice and dd9 will have netball instead.

 

Tuesday is just a half day of academics and is much the same in the morning as Monday but we do no art or hands on learning time after lunch as my younger daughter has homeschool gymnastics from 1 - 2pm and ds13 has a paper run to do. At 5:30pm ds11 goes to rugby practice.

 

Wednesday is much the same as Monday except that dd9 goes to homeschool choir with her Nana in the afternoon while I spend time working with the boys on any subjects they are having difficulties on or need more focus on. I usually try to get some baking done on this day too with or without helpers. Every 2nd Wednesday the boys have a homeschool friend over for the afternoon. Ds13 has rugby practice at 5pm.

Thursday is an academic free day here. I play netball in the morning and then ds13 and ds11 have homeschool basketball practice in the afternoon followed by dd9's piano lesson and ds13 has his paper run. Ds11 also has rugby practice at 5:30pm. In between all these activities the kids are pretty much free to do their own thing including electronics which aren't usually available on other week days.

Friday: We do a half day on Fridays, usually just our unit study and math. We also try to get some housework done and the weekly grocery shopping and every 2nd Friday we have our Homeschooling Boys group for boys aged 11-15yrs. We meet at each others houses or some other location for the boys to socialize while us mums support each other and discuss any issues we are dealing with on the homeschooling front.

Saturdays we do the bulk of our housework and during the winter the boys both play rugby too.

 

 

Sunday is family day and a day of rest.
