Plans for next term

I thought I'd post our plan for next terms unit study on Antartica in case some of you would like to join us and do a similar unit st the same time. Then we could compare notes and perhaps post pictures of what our kids come up with.

This unit is for my children... ds13, ds11, and dd9 - They will work with varying degrees of independence and require varying amounts of help and support with the activities listed below. eg: some things may be dictated rather than written from scratch by my younger two kids. I may make writing assignments longer than mentioned for ds13 as time goes by but I am playing this by ear as he also has math and his own research project to complete as well.

It should be noted that we only do a 4 day academic week as on Thursday's we are participate in activities outside of the home.

Anyway here is the unit....

Term Two 2010

Topic – Antarctica

 

Week One:

 

Monday: Introduction – Marine reserve – Write what it means that Antarctica is a marine reserve. Make a Conservation poster.

Tuesday: Why is Antarctica a desert? Write 1 paragraph and illustrate

Wednesday: Antarctica Now – Read about what scientists are learning about Antarctica as it is now how are they using this information? Write a paragraph about this.

Friday: Day and Night, Winter and Summer – Read about and discuss seasonal differences and their effect on the days and nights in Antarctica. Make a chart/poster to illustrate the differences

 

Week two:

Monday: Exploration to Antarctica – Read about explorers who have been to Antarctica and what they encountered there. Creative writing: Imagine you are an explorer in Antarctica, Write a story about what you would encounter when there.

Tuesday: The History of Scotts Base – Start on a 3 paragraph report about Scott's journey to Antarctica.

Wednesday: Work on your report some more.

Friday: Finish report and add pictures and diagrams found online.

Week Three:

Monday: Animals of Antarctica – read about and discuss some of the animals that live in Antarctica. Pick one animal each and research/read more. Then write a 3 paragraph report on your animal and include illustrations.

Tuesday: Continue to work on your report

Wednesday: Proofread and edit report

Friday: Type up good copy of report add illustrations and hand in.

 

Week Four:

Monday: Antarctic Art – Look at some examples of artwork that people have done relating to Antarctica and then begin planning an art project of your own about Antarctica, either a painting, a poster or perhaps a model of some sort. Try to include as many elements as we have learned about over the past 3 weeks.

Tuesday: Continue working on Art Project

Wednesday: Continue working on Art Project

Friday: Write a blurb to accompany you art project and present.

 

Week Five:

Monday: Field Trip to Kelly Tarltons

Tuesday: Discuss what was learned in relation to Antarctica – Write 1-3 paragraphs about our trip there.

Wednesday: Poetry – Read poetry with Antarctica as the main focus. Write a poem that describes Antarctica and then present nicely.

Friday: Collect everything you have done as part of this study and present it on a project board or in a lapbook or scrapbook. Items too big should be included as photos. The process you have taken to complete these items should be noted next to the photos.
